Project Description
What is Bichectomy?
Bichectomy is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at improving the appearance of the face and is also known as cheek reduction surgery. This procedure enhances the prominence of the cheekbones and provides a more contoured facial line. It is often sought by individuals aiming for a youthful and healthy appearance.
Who Can Undergo Bichectomy?
Bichectomy is suitable for men and women over the age of 18 with a normal weight and a round face. However, it is not recommended for individuals who are overweight, obese, or over 45 years old. As people age, there may be significant reduction in Bichat fat pads, which can cause early aging of the face. Given that each patient’s condition can vary, it is crucial for the surgeon to conduct a thorough evaluation.
How is Bichectomy Performed?
Bichectomy is an outpatient procedure, also known as cheek thinning surgery. It is performed under local anesthesia. Prior to the surgery, oral hygiene is important to minimize the risk of infection. During the procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision inside the cheek to remove Bichat fat pads. After the fat pads are removed, the incision is closed with stitches and a compressive bandage is applied. The entire procedure typically lasts between 30 and 45 minutes, and the patient can be discharged on the same day.
Pre-Bichectomy Care
To facilitate a faster recovery, patients should avoid alcohol and smoking for at least one week before the surgery. Additionally, any aspirin or blood-thinning medications should be stopped before the procedure. Patients who are on regular medication for health reasons should inform their doctor about all the medications they are taking prior to the surgery.
Post-Bichectomy Recovery
The recovery process after bichectomy varies from patient to patient. Generally, improvement is observed within 14 days post-operation. During the first three days, consuming soft foods and cold beverages helps prevent potential bleeding. Patients are also advised to avoid sun exposure. After the removal of fat pads, any swelling or bruising should subside within 3 to 6 months in case of inflammation.
